Warrior Chapel Centenary

Published on Saturday 9 January 2021

A Centenary Celebration of the Dedication of the Warrior Chapel dedicated in memory of the men of Wimbledon 'who died that England might live'.

Today 9th January 2021, a century after the event, St Mary's Church was going to hold a online Zoom service in the Warrior Chapel with the choir and readers present, and Revd Nils Bersweden conducting the service to give thanks for its dedication by the Bishop of Southwark on 8th January 1921. The service was to echo the prayers and readings that were used at the original service, as well as the hymns and anthem, which our present choir was going to sing. The flower team had prepared flowers for the altar which can be seen on the photograph above taken this morning.

Due to unprecedented COVID infections in London, it was decided for everyone's safety not to go ahead with the service, but instead to make the Order of Service available, along with a transcript from the Wimbledon Borough News dated January 14th 1921 when the original service was reported. It includes the sermon from the Bishop, excerpts of which were to be read at the service.

Mary Ann Turnbull has also compiled a history of the Warrior Chapel (48MB) which many will find interesting.

May all those who are commemorated in this Chapel rest in peace, and rise in glory!
