Buddy Scheme

Lots of people are setting up systems to support households who are self-isolating either because they are particularly vulnerable, because they have been in contact with someone who has Covid 19 or because a member of the household is unwell.

We are setting up a system so members of the St Mary's family can support each other during the current epidemic. We will be looking for volunteers who would be willing to support one other household which is self-isolating with shopping for groceries and over the counter medicines. We will aim to find self-isolating households a buddy who lives near-by.

If you are self-isolating

Please email and put 'Help Needed' as the subject. Please include your full name, home address with postcode and your telephone number. We will let you know who your buddy is and how to get in touch with them.

If you can be a buddy

Please email and put 'Volunteer' as the subject. Please include your full name, home address with postcode and your telephone number. We will let you know who your buddy is and how to get in touch with them.

What happens next

The Parish Office will match up the self-isolating with buddies and send the most up to date copy of the rules. Buddies please contact your self-isolator as soon as you get their contact details.

We are all vulnerable to this disease and many of us may end up both being and needing a buddy.

Please get in touch with the office or one of the clergy if there are any problems.

Rules for St Mary's Buddies and Self-isolators

  • No face to face contact between buddies and those self-isolating; there is a risk to both parties. Please only contact each other by telephone and email.
  • If a Buddy becomes ill please let the office know and we will find a replacement.
  • Please agree how the shopping is going to be paid for before you pass over a shopping list/take an order. Electronic payment is probably best, but please make your own arrangements and be mindful of infection control.
  • When a buddy delivers the shopping it should be left on the doorstep, or at the flat front door. The receipt should be put through the letter box and then the bell rung as you leave.
  • If you are reimbursing your buddy for shopping on line please pay the exact amount, do not overpay (it may cause embarrassment). If you are paying by cash please discuss how you are going to sort out change. Please consider cheques as an alternative form of payment.
  • Buddies should not take cash out of cash machines on behalf of their Self-Isolator or handle debit or credit cards.
  • Buddies should not collect prescription medicine.
  • No Gifts. Being the generous people you are both Buddy and Self-Isolater might want to give each other gifts. Please do not as this is an infection risk. You might like to get together for a cup of tea when this is all over; or send a card to say thank you.
  • Only members of St Mary's (people on our contact database) may have or be a buddy.

These rules may be updated in the light of experience or need, please let us know if you have any suggestions for changes.

The most up to date version of the rules will be sent to Buddies and Self-Isolators when they are matched up.

Thank you everyone for supporting this project and one another.
