Wedding Music

Most music at weddings in St Mary's belongs to the 'traditional' genre, played on the organ and sung by singers. However, Max is very happy to accommodate music from other traditions, such as worship songs played on the piano. When planning their wedding, couples should contact Max to discuss music (, 07581 497 335) preferably by meeting him after one of the Sunday services at St Mary's, or over the phone.

Couples normally choose:

  • Music to be played before the service as wedding guests arrive in church
  • A piece to be played as the Bride enters
  • Hymns (typically three) to be sung during the service
  • Music (typically two pieces) to be played or sung during the signing of the register
  • A piece to be played as the couple exits the church at the end of the service

Below is suggested music for each part of the service - there are recordings of each of these pieces on YouTube.

Music choices for Before the Service and the Signing of the Register are often similar so fit into the same list here:

  • Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring (from Cantata No. 147) - Bach
  • Bist Du bei Mir - Bach
  • Sheep may Safely Graze (from Cantata No. 208) - Bach
  • Prière à Notre-Dame (from Suite Gothique) - Léon Boëllmann
  • Air (from Water Music) - Handel
  • Chanson de Matin - Elgar
  • Minuet (from Berenice) - Handel

Here are the popular choices for the Entrance of the Bride:

  • Hornpipe (from Water Music) - Handel
  • Prince of Denmark's March - Clarke
  • Trumpet Tune - Purcell
  • Trumpet Voluntary - Stanley
  • Bridal March (from Lohengrin) - Wagner
  • Canon in D major - Pachelbel

It would be difficult to list all possible hymns, but Max is very happy to suggest suitable ones when meeting couples.

Here are popular choices for Exit Music:

  • Wedding March (from A Midsummer Night's Dream) - Mendelssohn
  • Arrival of the Queen of Sheba (Sinfonia from Solomon)- Handel
  • Toccata (from Symphonie No. 5)- Widor
  • Sortie in Eb - Lefébure-Wély
  • Crown Imperial - Walton
  • Nun Danket Alle Gott - Karg-Elert

At St Mary's, couples can engage the church choir, or up to four professional singers, either simply to boost the hymn singing, or to sing a solo choral piece. This usually happens at the Signing of the Register, instead of organ music. Popular choices are the following:

  • Panis Angelicus - Franck
  • Ave Maria - Schubert
  • The Lord Bless You and Keep You - Rutter
  • This Marriage - Whitacre

In special cases, wedding couples can ask friends or family to sing or play during the Signing of the Register. Max can act as an accompanist - this can be discussed during the meeting.

Recording the Service

Many wedding couples at St Mary's decide to have a visual record of their wedding service. Wedding couples that wish to do this should let Max know, and be aware that the musicians' fees are doubled if they do this.

Post-Service Wedding Music at Receptions

Max is also pleased to offer his services as a classical or jazz pianist at wedding receptions. He is also an experienced violinist at such functions, and can help to provide couples with string quartets.
