The music at our Sunday Eucharist (9:30am) and Evensong (6:30pm) is led by St Mary's Church Choir, an accomplished group of mixed voices who sing repertoire from the standard Anglican choral tradition - from Renaissance polyphony by Byrd and Palestrina to 20th and 21st century choral music by MacMillan and Chilcott.

The adult choir is made up of around 40 singers, and the focus of our activities is the Friday evening rehearsal, from 7:45pm until 9:15pm. During this rehearsal we prepare motets and mass settings for the 9:30am Eucharist on Sunday mornings, as well as other anthems and canticle settings for our weekly full Choral Evensong.

In addition to attending the Friday evening rehearsal, most choir members sing regularly for the Sunday morning Eucharist. Some sing at Evensong as well, at 6:30pm on Sunday evenings, and a few just at Evensong.

Special Services and Concerts

Twice annually we present a concert in St Mary's Church. We have performed Handel's Messiah and Coronation Anthems, Bach's St John Passion, Haydn's Nelson Mass, Brahms' Requiem, Bach Cantatas no. 140 & 147, Scarlatti's Stabat Mater and Stainer's Crucifixion, as well as concerts consisting of anthems and motets for the church's seasons, such as Advent, Lent and Passiontide. These events usually involve a larger choir, with St Mary's regular singers plus guests.

In April 2017 the choir gave an outstanding and moving liturgical performance of Bach's St Matthew Passion, with Nicholas Mulroy as Evangelist, accompanied by a group of distinguished baroque players, led by Alison Bury. The performance was in German, with a few of the chorales sung by the whole congregation in English.

The annual candle-lit Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols takes place on the Sunday evening before Christmas and is one of the events which regularly sees the church packed to the rafters. Among other services with special music are the Service of Advent Light with Advent carols, and the Good Friday Liturgy with Victoria's setting of the St John Passion.

Cathedral Visits

St Mary's Choir also sings at cathedrals. As well as annual invitations to sing services at St Paul's Cathedral and Westminster Abbey, we have sung in Worcester, Salisbury and Ely Cathedrals, as well as at Christ Church, Oxford.

St John Passion: Petrus, der nicht denkt

St John Passion: Kreuzige

Brahms' Requiem: Herr, lehre doch mich

Brahms' Requiem: Ihr habt nun Traurigkeit

Handel's Messiah: Amen

The choir is a centre-point for social activity and community spirit, with weekly post-rehearsal trips to the Rose & Crown or Crooked Billet (sometimes both!) regular parties and curry nights, and even trips to cricket matches! The Friday evening rehearsal is perfect for switching off from the working week. We have had had tennis and frisbee evenings, and our Choir Cricket team has annual fixtures against St Martin-in-the-Fields and All Saints Fulham.
